SECURITY MESSAGE FOR U.S. CITIZENS

Revised Country Specific Information and Holiday Travel Advice

The Tunisian Ministry of Interior recently announced that security forces had arrested a group of men with weapons operating in the area of Fernana in Jendouba Governorate, near the Tunisian-Algerian border. Earlier in December, clashes took place between a group of armed men and security forces in Feriana in the Governorate of Kasserine. One policeman was killed. Following these security operations, additional police and National Guard patrols have been deployed in the greater Tunis area.

The U.S. Embassy recommends that U.S. citizens in Tunisia review the current Travel Warning and the updated Country Specific Information for Tunisia. U.S. citizens are also strongly encouraged to maintain a high level of vigilance, be aware of local events, report suspicious activity to the local police, and take appropriate steps to bolster their personal security. Perpetrators of criminal or terror acts might use the distraction of the holidays as a cover for their actions.

As a matter of general practice, U.S. citizens should avoid areas where large gatherings may occur. Even demonstrations or events intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence. U.S. citizens in Tunisia are urged to monitor local news reports and to plan their activities accordingly.

All U.S. citizens in Tunisia are encouraged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). U.S. citizens without internet access may enroll directly at the U.S. Embassy. By enrolling, U.S. citizens make it easier for the Embassy to contact them in case of emergency.
